Contact Dermatitis is an Uncommon Allergy in Dogs

What is getting on Fido

As one of the five allergies in dogs, contact dermatitis is the least common. This type of allergy is probably the easiest to solve with a little detective work. A reaction occurs when something is touching your pet's skin. Contact allergens include grass, leaves, wool, and plastic. Pets may also become allergic to beddings, and flea collars.

Commonly affected areas are the parts of the body which have very little hair and are directly exposed to the allergen. Symptoms of dermatitis:

  • Redness
  • Blistered lesions
  • Small bumps on the lips, muzzle, abdomen and/or back of the paws
Look for one or all of these symptoms.

Treating Contact Dermatitis

For this particular allergy the simplest solution is to remove the contact. This is where the detective work comes in handy. Watch your animal's habits and routines. You might be able to pinpoint a suspect bed or wool sweater. Also, if you use a plastic food bowl switch to ceramic or metal.

Take Note

Once you have discovered the allergen and have removed it, bathe your dog with a premium hypoallergenic shampoo to remove the antigen from the skin.
