Our family of dogs has a definite balance of hierarchy. Most behavior problems are determined early on, usually in the first six months of a dogs life. Puppies need to be with their Mom for at least eight weeks. This allows them to learn their socialization skills from her and the other puppies. When puppies don't have this opportunity to socialize they are more likely to be uncomfortable meeting other dogs, and, as they age, they tend to be more timid and cautious.

    Dog Will Be Dogs

Dog behavior problems can also be determined by genetics, up-bringing, and social experiences. To prevent problems from occurring always be gentle when handling your dog. This does not mean you cannot wrestle with your dog. Just set limits ,if he gets carried away tell him to "settle" or say "gentle". Never get angry and hit your dog, this will only make things worse and could possibly make your dog mean and unapproachable. Do not create anxiety in your dogs life. His primary goal is to please you, don't ruin this relationship by mistreating or neglecting your pet.

When you and your dog are in social situations such as at the park with other dogs be aware how they approach each other. Watch for signs of aggression such as the ruff getting up on your dog or the other dog, aggressive barking and pulling at the leash. Also watch for signs of friendliness such as the happy wag of the tail or the wiggle of the body and any other playful behavior. This is what you want for your dog, now let the dogs get acquainted.

When dogs meet for the first time it involves the sniffing of the buttocks (yes this is normal), they will also smell around the face and body. Once they are past the meet and greet, and based on the information that was gathered from all that sniffing they will either begin to play, or go their separate ways.
