Do You Have an Older Dog

(Recommended natural supplies for your older dog are located at the end of this page)

Do you know if you have an older dog? More than one-third of American pet owners don't know when their dog will become a senior dog! There are over 71 million dog owners in the U.S., this means there are millions of pet owners who need more information on how and when to accommodate and care for their aging dog. There are many parallels between the aging human and the aging dog. A.J and Lilly

They are:

  • Graying hair
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Dental health
  • Painful and stiff joints
  • Loss of cognitive function

Keep Your Older Dog Healthy And Comfortable

Keep in mind that most dogs start to show aging signs around seven years of age, and larger dogs start sooner. Because of the similarities that exist between an older dog and an older human many of the treatments are the same.

  • Exercise for weight control: As pets age, shorter and slower walks are preferred. Keep the walks consistent. Exercise will keep the extra pounds and various health problems to a minimum.
  • Supplements for older dog joint care: There are many brands available today. Make sure you choose a brand with high levels of glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM, along with omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Comfort for arthritis: Quality Dog Beds - Drs. Foster & Smith An orthopedic dog bed can have therapeutic benefits if your older dog suffers from arthritic joints. Also sleeping in a warm room will ease her stiffness.
  • Teaching old dogs new tricks: Keep your dogs brain in tip top shape with mental stimulation, regular exercise, and a healthy diet.
  • Prevent dental plaque and gingivitis: Sometimes brushing your pet's teeth daily is hard to fit in your schedule. Not to worry, there are many chew toys that will help control plaque. Chew toys not only provide hours of entertainment they do a good job of cleaning the teeth. Look for Greenies, rawhide, or Nylabones.

Lakota Sue

Our Little Old Lady

Our oldest dog Lakota Sue has started to show evidence of her old age. Always an active dog she has slowed down to taking just a few hikes with us.

We have started her on a good supplement for joints, and also bought her a good bed so she can sleep in doors with us. During the hikes she perks up immensely and seems to thrive on the different smells and sounds. Along with her exercise we feed her a nutritious diet for seniors. We hope to have her around at least a few more years.
