Travel with your pet more comfortably with the right gear

If it is possible, take your pet on the family vacation. Put together a pet travel supply checklist. This will keep you organized and insure you have all the necessary items for a great experience. Pets are a part of the family and it is important to share some good times and memories with them. Before you set on your journey have your pet groomed and bathed. This will cut down on loose fur, dander and the smell. Remember you want to enjoy your vacation.

    Basic pet travel supply checklist

  • Food, bottled water and sealable bowls
  • A quality pet carrier or a harness seat belt
  • proof of current vaccinations
  • Current i.d. tags with your phone number (cell# and destination phone #)
  • Leash and harness
  • Medications and supplements your pet may be taking
  • An assortment of your pets favorite toys
  • A recent photo of your pet in case she gets lost
  • Bedding for inside the carrier
  • Basic grooming tools

Pet travel supply icon stores carry a wide variety of pet travel accessories to make traveling with your pet a pleasurable event. The most common way to travel with your pet is by car. Always use a pet travel carrier or a harness seat belt in a moving vehicle. If your pet is going to be using a seat belt, use a seat cover or towels to protect the fabric and keep the seat clean.

When using a pet travel carrier make sure it is large enough for your pet to sit, stand and lay down in, but not so large as to allow your pet to be thrown around during travel. Acclimate your pet to the carrier, by having him use it for at least 10 days prior to traveling.

For a quality pet travel carrier look for:

  • Durability, smooth edges and opaque sides
  • Adequate ventilation on all four sides
  • A secure reversible grille door with a spring loaded door latch
  • non-spill food and water dishes that attach securely to the door
  • One that is approved for domestic and international air transport

When planning a trip with your pet, research the city you will be traveling to. You will want to know if pets are allowed at the hotel, motel, bed and breakfast or wherever your accomadations will be. Locate pet friendly places you can go to, such as parks, beaches, open space areas, etc...

Air Travel With Your Pet

If you are going to be traveling with your pet by plane, there is some information you need to know. If possible schedule a direct flight and do not assume that if you have a small pet, you can bring it into the cabin area of the plane in a small carrier. Some airlines do allow it but not all. Some airlines do not allow you to bring your pet as excess cargo. Allow yourself plenty of time when arranging a flight so you can ask all the questions concerning your pet traveling on the plane. Tips if your dog travels in the cargo hold :

  • Have an airline approved pet carrier
  • Airlines require a travel certificate from your vet
  • Do not use a lock instead use a zip strap to secure the door of the carrier. This way it can be cut off, and the carrier can be opened in case of emergency
  • Place live animal stickers on all sides of the carrier
  • Use arrow stickers so handlers know which side is up
  • Use a soft pad to line the carrier for comfort and accidents
  • Affix a photo of the pet with your phone number and address of your destination to the carrier
  • Write your pets name on the front of the carrier
