Use Positive Dog Training To Achieve Good Behavioral Results

Notice how positive dog training gives your dog a great sense of pride when he completes a dog command correctly. Just watch his expressions when praised and given treats. Give the dog commands repetitively and your dog will proudly obey you. karen with boomer and jessie

For positive dog training to work, you must be consistent with commands. And when the dog command is accomplished, reward immediately with praise and a treat or your dog may not associate it with the correct action. For example, when your dog is given the command to "sit" give praise and reward a treat before allowing your dog to stand up, otherwise he may think the reward is for standing up.

These are the most common dog commands:

  • Sit-Stay- Is basically one command that should be used primarily when your dog is excited to see you, or other people. Give the sit-stay command to keep him from jumping. Once he is in the sit position, then greet him with praise and affection.
  • Down- When the excitement gets to be too much, you may need to use this command in order to better control your dog's behavior. Start from the sit command, then give the down or lay down command, followed by stay, and end with praise and reward.
  • Come-Use this command when you want your dog to come to you. Once he has come to you give him praise and reward, followed by whatever your next command will be. For this command to work be consistent with the praise and reward. You may have to use your special voice ("Come Boomer, You Big Shweetie!).
  • Heel- Teach this command once he has learned the sit-stay command. When you walk your dog, keep him on your left side and his neck even wth your left leg. This helps to remind your dog that your are in control. Begin with a training collar and lead, using both hands put the loop around your right and hold the lead with the left, keep your elbow at your side and your arm pointing straight out. Put your dog in the sit command, then say "heel" or lets go" and begin to walk, he should follow and stay at your side, with the lead remaining relaxed. If he pulls or stops give the heel command, And a couple of short pulls on the lead. Never pull at the lead aggressively. Repeat the steps as necessary, changing directions by walking in figure eights and circles. keep the sessions short in the beginning, maybe five to ten minutes, and as always end with praise and reward.

Praise and Reward !

You want to get a reaction that is positive when training your dog. To receive these reactions you use praise and rewards. Rewards can be food treats that are small, easy to chew (not crumbly) and irresistible. This way your dog will look to you for more and not on the ground, where he can become distracted from the training session.

Proper positive dog training equipment will boost your results.

We had to experiment with different items to find out what worked best for our dogs. Keep some treats in a baggie or pocket when you are on walks or working on commands, and remember to use praise with the rewards. Say "good boy" or "thats a good dog" using your special happy voice for your dog. Some dogs respond better to toys and play versus treats. Since you know your dog best, you will have to determine what works.
